Flash Fiction Runner-Up: Salmren’s Triumph by Will Nuessle

Please join us in congratulating the runner-up in Page Turner Magazine’s very first flash fiction contest: Dragon Fire! Will crafted a whimsical lyric paying homage to an oft-overlooked aspect of our scaly friends. So grab a tankard of your favorite potation and sing along with us as we celebrate Salmren’s Triumph.

Salmren’s Triumph – a drinking song

(to be enjoyed lustily and drunkenly if at all possible)

The songs they sing of a dragon’s wing – but who sings songs of the tail?

A leathery, cut-down-the-heathery thing – but who sings songs of the tail?

Now Salmren knew, was to him they flew, to show him the things only dragons shew,

Teburah the red and Ceejarno the blue – but who sings songs of the tail?

We know the ire of a dragon’s fire – but who sings songs of the tail?

Make haste, or ye’ll have a funeral pyre – but who sings songs of the tail?

Kylian went, to the dragons sent, to learn of the things all were broken and bent,

His skull was so thick that it scarce made a dent – but who sings songs of the tail?

Makes maidens sigh does a dragon’s eye – but who sings songs of the tail?

You’ll see to your core and you’ll wonder why – but who sings songs of the tail?

Gyrdein along for to sing the songs, the power to right ever’thing that was wrong,

“We know the ire of a dragon’s fire — but who sings the songs of the tail?”

— Will Nuessle

The nights were cold yet his love was long – but who sings songs of the tail?

Their tails are enormous, wrap round and conform us

Their tails are so thick ye might say they were wicked

Their tails come in yellow to frighten a fellow

Their tails shine in blue, lad, you’ll know terror too

Their tails colored red send you straight off yer head

Their tails flash all green, you’ll think you’ve never seen

Such a sight in your life, make you take her to wife, make a perfectly

Happy man swallow his fife, give a beggar a kegger and

Show him yer knife, lad,

Then come and tell us the tale!
